In June 2009, at the huge Waterloo re-enactment in Belgium, one of the cavalry horses collapsed and died. Tragic for the owner/rider, but we all know these things can happen.
Accidents, with the level of supervision film and TV companies use these days, are just that – accidents. I look at it this way; how many more of racing’s cast-offs will be re-homed to loving owners and lead useful lives as a result of all the publicity and hype surrounding this series? Plenty, I’ll bet.
Accidents do happen and I know they are not intentional but if war scenes are pulled off then why would a racing scene be so difficult. I think they let their guard down toward these horses. What bothers me in todays world horses are used like cars …run, parked, run parked. This is a mentality honed because we don’t deal with livestock like in the past. So, were they properly watered, cooled down, rested after a racing scene (yes they did it on film but in real life?) Action scenes are watched by animal rights groups like hawks do mice. But Could they have just let down on Luck?
This is why I try to keep in touch with horse lovers and writers, to help them NOT let their guards down and forget to take care of the horse too. I have to admit, this does bother me watching this series now.
